Pilot Systems specializes in helping companies design and test their vehicles to comply with U.S. Safety Standards. We generally start by helping our customers understand that vehicles sold in the U.S. have to meet a complex set of unique safety regulations that cover full vehicle crash tests in various modes of impact (frontal, side and rear) with belted and unbelted dummies of various sizes, and component tests of vehicle interior and exterior. While meeting and exceeding the Federal Requirements, commonly referred to as the FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards), is a must for all vehicles marketed in U.S., vehicles are also designed to achieve good ratings in public domain testing. A set of rating tests are conducted by NHTSA in the “Stars on Cars Labeling” program (i.e. NCAP or “New Car Assessment Program”), and another set of rating tests are conducted by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). Good ratings in these tests are used by OEMs in marketing campaigns to demonstrate leadership or competitiveness in safety. Marketing studies have shown that high ratings, in these third party tests, directly affect sales. Other considerations, like leadership in safety, might require the introduction of game changing safety features that are first in the industry. Pilot Systems and its network of experts have the ability to help our customers develop and implement an overall safety strategy that is in concert with their business goals.
